Default Lack of family support?

What do you do when you want to lose weight (diet and exercise) but your family is opposed to it?
My mother references people she knows who have lost weight but gained it all back and my dad keeps saying that gym membership is too expensive...
anyone with a similar problem? How do you deal with it?

Ummmm....ya! They actually make me feel guilty for even wanting to lose weight. I weigh 145 and would like to weigh 120-125 in my 5 foot 4 inch frame. Most of my family is medium build and they think cuz I look 'fine' I should be happy where I am. Also, sine I have 20-25 pounds to lose to reach my goal and others in my family have 75-100 they make me feel like an idiot for trying to lose 'only' 20 pounds...why not leave it?....that's the feeling I get from them.

How do I deal with it? Probably in the only way I can....I come here to BuddySlim for my support and I don't even bring it up with my family at all. If you need positive, encouraging and inspirational support instead of all the negativity our own families hand out.....you have found the right spot! I have to block out the negativity beacuse I find it mentally and physically draining....and its unhealthy!!

thanks!
inspiration, support and motivation are all welcome for me, I need them. But sometimes I just enjoy ranting because my family are not supportive of losing weight (thats what blogging is for?)
here you can buy those special K granola bars for weightloss (their lowfat) and my parents are like...all this dieting stuff, people we know who diet gain it back. They are very negative...it's not very encouraging if your just trying to live a healthier lifestyle

hi. i know exactly how you feel my families the same! everytime i want to discuss my weight issues i always get this answer "just eat less" lol problem with that is that i only eat 1-2 meals a day with no snacks, so it doesnt help much and as for my boyfriend, as soon as you mention that your trying to lose weight he pops to dominos and buys the biggest double decadence pizza there.
i think the problem with unsupportive families is that they do not relate well enough to how we are feeling!

anyways i hope you achieve your goals

I can so relate to this! I have a skinny best friend who can eat whatever she wants, my mother is tiny, and the boyfriend tells me I am hot and thats why he wont support it. Its so irritating, I just try to think that I am stronger than that and I want this for me, no one else. Its helps most of the time, but posting helps too. I love this site for that. Plus joining a team is VERY helpful, it makes you accountable for losing weight. Just keep in mind how surprised they will be when they see you losing and see the determination you have, thats the thought I try to keep 24/7.

well my family eats 24/7 sometimes too. My dad eats so much, mostly junk food and my mom sees nothing wrong with being overweight. I've been going to Curves for 3 days a week and not telling my dad, or my boyfriend.
My boyfriend would support my weight loss efforts, he is the one who suggested trying because he is concerned for my health, and he is on a diet too...but always cheats on that. Plus I don't want to tell him I am trying to lose weight...because I'm afraid I won't lose it and then I'll be more disappointed.
I have joined a team, the Wildcats they are very supportive and I'm glad I found then because I can talk to them about this rather than with my family...

Well here is my suggestion. I think you should at least tell your boyfriend what you are trying to do. I makes you accountable. You know that he will be paying attention to how well you do, thus causing you to try harder. Just a thought. If you dont get the support you need then you always have this site!

I agree with that Melissa. Tell your BF how you feel. My husband is the same way...he thinks I look GREAT for having 4 kids. But I am 25 over where I was when we met, which makes me feel FAT. I "know" that for having 4 kids, I'm not too bad...but I'm not where I want to be! I've told my husband that being at this weight doesn't really get me into the "mood" to be intimate w/ him in "that way"...& that a lot of times I just go through w/ it because I'm doing it for him. I think w/ him being a guy...he can relate more to that, and now is more supportive of me trying to lose weight. Good luck...I know when it's "only" 20-25 lbs to lose, it can be difficult to get people's support. We're here for ya!

My family would probably support me if I let them in on my lifestyle change but I want to be able to say I did it for me when I am done and not be criticized or watched like a hawk and told when I slip up. It is me to decide what a slip up is not them!

Wow, I can't believe families wouldn't be supportive. It's amazing how lax the world has gotten about that extra 20 lbs. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to be the size you want to be. You will be in better health. People think, "Oh, 20 lbs isn't going to cause health problems", but over time it will, or the 20 lbs will go up as a person gets older and soon it's 30 lbs.
My family is super supportive because we've all had issues with weight. My sister and my niece lost their weight, and I finally got tired of being the fat person in pictures, so decided to lose mine too. And they're calling me and telling me how proud they are, that they were getting worried for me because I used to be slim and they think it's great I am finally doing something for me.

Just remember that this weight loss is for you; it's for your health and your happiness. It took me a while to learn I have to change because I want the change, not because someone else wants me to change.

Good luck and just come here for support! It's the best thing I've ever run into on a search on the internet!!
