Hi, I'm new. I have hired a personal trainer staring Monday and I hope to lose 30 pounds by Jan 1st. My family doesn't support my choice in getting a personal trainer but I really think it will motivate and push me towards losing the large amount of weight I have put on this year. I am currently 250 and my goal weight is 150.

Why wouldn\'t your family approve of a personal trainer? That doesn\'t make sense, and anyway if you are paying for it, it should be your own decision. I think once they see your accomplishments with it, they will change their tune. Remember who you are doing this for, YOU!

Awww, thanks! I think it\'s a smart move and that it will pay off as long as I am dedicated! I\'m feeling good about it and I\'m excited. I start Monday so let\'s see how it goes!

I agree that if you\'re paying for it it\'s none of your family\'s business. But isn\'t 30 lbs. in one month a bit much?

Yeah, it is a high goal but I\'m hoping that with the help of the trainer four days a week. We\'ll see, it probably won\'t be as much as that but I can always hope! Thanks for the support about the trainer, no matter what my family thinks, this is what I need at this point.

I think a personal trainer is a great idea! and it\'s your money not your families. So go for it! And I agree with Mary losing 30 lbs before January is a little too much and too fast that is not really very healthy.

Just let your family know that you have hired a personal trainer so that you can live a happy, healthy life. Perhaps they are worried that you are going to try to get them to be healthier too. Just let them know that you are learning for you, not to preach to them. I would also mention that you would like their support of your decision but if they choose not to support you, it will not stop you from reaching your goals.

You know what I have the same problem, what I do is just tell them what I am doing if they like fine and if they don\'t oh well.

Rebekah, I think it\'s great that you\'re taking steps to hire a trainer and work on getting yourself healthy. The other posters are right though - to lose 30lbs in one month would be VERY unhealthy, plus it won\'t do you any motivational good if you set such a high goal and then aren\'t able to accomplish it. It\'s important to set achievable mini-goals in between (I\"ll lose 2 lbs this week) on the way to our ultimate goal (I\'ll lose 30 lbs this year), so we don\'t fall off track!
In any case, we\'re halfway through December now - how is it going?? Are you enjoying your sessions with the trainer? Seeing good results? Let us know!
