Ah yes, I have heel pain on & off for years.
There's a couple of causes - your doctor should at least try to investigate them, but they require different treatments.* Also orthotics may be very helpful - see your doctor or go to a Podiatrist
1. Plantar fasciitis - very painful and take a long time to go away (Requires stretching, rest & medical attention)
2. Tendonitis in the heel - very painful and not much they can do.* Stretching helps, I have been prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs too, but really you have to work very hard to get rid of it.
3. There's lots of other things (heel spurs, micro fractures,....etc) but you need to have your doctor give a better diagnosis (or go to a good Podiatrist).

Losing weight will help but so might orthotics or other treatments too.

Dan is right on the money! I think you should definatly get another opinion. For one thing- see a podiatrist.
Also, a massage is EXTREMELY beneficial as well as possibly seeing a Chiropractor.
Never just "accept" pain.

PS keep us posted on what you find that relieves it. I also have heel pain on occasion. I usually get it when I am on my feet too long. I find that a massage from the DH (which pales in comparison to a professional one!!) or some pain pills alleviates it. But alas, it will inevitably return at some point.
