Default No need to diet AND exercise to lose weight???

Ok, one more...I found this one on a news page on the net. Thought you might like to read it.

No need to diet AND exercise to lose weight?
Thu Feb 22, 9:23 AM ET

A new study debunks the widely held belief that diet plus exercise is the most effective way to lose weight. Researchers report that dieting alone is just as effective as dieting plus exercise.
"For weight loss to occur, an individual needs to maintain a difference between the number of calories they consume everyday and the number of calories they burn through metabolism and physical activity," Dr. Leanne Redman of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, explains in a press release.
"What we found was that it did not matter whether a reduction in calories was achieved through diet or burned everyday through exercise."
Thirty-five overweight but otherwise healthy adults -- 16 men and 19 women -- completed the 6-month study. Twelve were assigned to a diet-only group; they reduced their calorie intake by 25 percent. Twelve were assigned to diet plus exercise; they reduced their calorie intake by 12.5 percent and increased their exercise by 12.5 percent. The remaining 11 subjects made no significant diet or exercise changes.
Redman and colleagues found that the diet-only group and the diet plus exercise group lost roughly the same amount of weight, albeit by different means. They lost about 10 percent of their body weight, 24 percent of their fat mass and 27 percent of their abdominal "visceral" fat -- the deep internal fat linked to heart disease risk.
Therefore, if the goal is purely shedding pounds, diet or exercise will work, according to this study. However, as the researchers point out, regular exercise can improve aerobic fitness and lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
The study also found that exercise did little to tone specific areas of the body. Fat was reduced consistently across the whole body and not more in any one trouble spot.
"Our study then would indicate that weight loss cannot override the way in which any individual stores fat. Perhaps an apple will always be an apple, and a pear, a pear," Redman concludes.
This suggests that people are "genetically programmed for fat storage in a particular pattern and that this programming cannot be easily overcome by weight loss," the authors note in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Someone commented on this article to me too and it kinda makes sense - I mean, I really have not been dieting much and have lost close to 30 pounds (although it has taken me a loooong time, too). But - just as they mention, exercise is still good for the heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, circulation, it\'s an anti-depressant, etc., etc. so I choose that over dieting anytime!.

I think that when you are very over weight you can just cut back the calories you eat and you will lose weight.. I think when you excersie you can burn even more calories... But this is how I see it... I\'m 100lbs over weight and my sis is only 40... I lose more weight then her just by eatting right... no excersie... she busts her butt and I still lose more... Now the more I lose the more I\'ll have to do to lose... So I\'ll excersie sooner or later... right now I\'m just trying to get through the baby and toddler years with my girls... Think thats enough excerise for me...hehe

The article was interesting that Mary put on. But exercise and healthy eating are still the best way to stay healthy longer and have a good stong cardiovascular system (in my opinion). Also it didn\'t mention that weight training is the only way to get toned, dieting and doing cardio won\'t do it. I call this the skinny-fat syndrome. When people just diet and do cardio with no strenght training, the end result is yes they are thinner but have no tone and defintion to the muscles They are a smaller version of their former fat selves. Building muscle helps in so many ways, the most important one to me is it keeps the bones strong so in the senior years there are less chances of broken bones..

I do know exercise is good for you. But there have been people on here, me included, that weren\'t able to get into any strenuous exercise, and were concerned that it may hamper their weight loss. That\'s why this article is important...to reassure those that can\'t do the strenuous exercise that they\'re not fighting a losing battle..

I totally agree with you Mary, exercising shouldn\'t have to be strenuous. Everyone should do what they can and they will get results. Doing weights still doesn\'t have to be strenuous either, my Mom can\'t lift very much at all so I tell her to do what is absolutely comfortable. Even using simple things like soup cans for working out the arms is great. .
