Default Family and Friends supportive?

Are your famiy and friends supportive? The first time I lost weight (4 yrs ago) my DH was skeptical at first. Until he saw how well I was doing and w/a lot of conviction. My children are awesome (11 & 8). They even spot coupons and look at labels for me. Now DH is very much behind me because when I eat healthier I feel better and cook better. Needless to say he reaps the benefits also. My friends are supportive but I get the "Why are you trying to lose weight?". I'm a little over 5'. Five pounds makes a big difference. I lost 30 lbs yrs ago and have almost put back on 20. Its been very gradual over time but not going back there. Curious as to what you all come across.

I think my friends and family TRY to be supportive, but they really dont get it...My husband is FINALLY on board after YEARS of not being...My friends say \"One bite wont hurt you\" and they dont realize that it will...Or they ALWAYS want to go out to eat...Its gotten better as I have gotten more control of myself, but I do think this is one of the biggest struggles we sometimes face...is getting those who love us to let go of the OLD us and help embrace the new us...

Default RE: Family and Friends supportive?

My family has never been supportive of me, except my sister Phyllis, and now my son. Micheal has been supportive from the beginning.
The funny thing is, my youngest sister, Betty is as big as I am, if not bigger. But as far as the rest of the family (older sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) is concerned (except for Phyllis), I\'m the fatty!! Betty is just plump and her weight is totally acceptable! Huh??? And I\'m always being told by the rest of them that I\'ll always be fat and I\'ll never be able to get the weight off so I shouldn\'t even bother trying!
So, the only ones getting any progress reports are my son and Phyllis. They are the only ones that give me any kind of encouragement or support.
We have a family reunion scheduled for Easter weekend and I\'m hoping to have enough weight off that it will be noticed, but I doubt any of them will notice it. I haven\'t seen some of them (aunts, uncles & cousins) in 9 years or more!

Default RE: Family and Friends supportive?

[FONT=\"Arial,]I am blessed to have a family that first of all would never denigrate me for being overweight - they are too loving & accepting. But second, when I\'m open with them about trying to eat more healthfully, or get more excercise, etc, they are VERY supportive. They will ask how it\'s going, offer advice if I ask, compliment my progress, etc. I am thankful every day for the wonderful support they give me!!
My friends are a different store....as Dawnie says, they\'re always wanting to go out & don\'t understand why I can\'t splurge \"once in a while\". I don\'t understand how they eat like they do & stay so thin - more power to them!! - but I just know I can\'t eat the same things they do without it having a serious impact, so it\'s hard to communicate with them about it since their experience is so different. I try not to let it keep me from going out & enjoying myself with them, but sometimes it\'s hard!

Default RE: Family and Friends supportive?

My family is supportive mostly. My husband tends to undermine my efforts at times, but mostly he\'s supportive. I think it helps that he and I are both trying to lose weight together. My in-laws are also very supportive - especially my mother in law.

She means well, but sometimes her well-meaning backfire because I\'m just a contrary person I think lol. For instance, she tried to give us an incentive to stay on track over the holidays. She had a gift card for $100 for Best Buy. The problem was, that she, my husband and I had to compete and whoever lost the most got it. Well...my husband loses weight at 5 lbs a week. I can\'t even come close to that. So, I kinda let that give me a reason to give up. I didn\'t try to go overboard, but I didn\'t really try to keep it up either.

Anyway, I guess my point was that my mother in law is very supportive and she\'s always trying to help us stay on track.

My friends on the other hand...I don\'t think it\'s so much them not being supportive as it is they want me to enjoy myself...LOL I don\'t know. They unknowingly sabotage me?? LOL
