“Go 100 Miles” Challenge

Our fitness challenge for 9/23 to 10/23, is something we were inspired by Bobbie on. We will start, each of us, to go 100 miles. You can do it any way you want… walking, running, biking, swimming, DVD workouts at home, circuit training, kickboxing, pilates, yoga.. whatever you want! Now if you’re one of the lucky ones and workout at the gym, where the treadmill or stationary bike tells you how many miles you’ve gone.. AWESOME! If not, we have a way to clock your miles… Nicole! That’s right! Nicole has a handy-dandy gadget at her disposal that can help you calculate your miles. For starters, if your exercise is walking, at home DVD’s, or classes of any kind.. you can use this easy mathematical equation… 15 minutes of exercise = ½ mile on your journey. If you’re a pedometer wearer and want her to, Nicole can take the number of steps you’ve done, plus it in, and give you your mileage! If you need her to calculate your miles for anything please let her know.. email her direct! For walking, she will need the duration that you walked. Went grocery shopping and walked around Walmart for 2 hours? It counts!! That would be 2 miles of walking! Now if you are a runner/jogger or bicyclist, Nicole will need your duration and either your heart rate and/or average speed (if you know it). So basically, if you’re not sure of your miles, email Nicole!!

WATER CHALLENGE

Are you drinking enough water? If you don't know, follow this link, enter your info and it will tell you how much water you need per day.

How Much Water Do You Need Today?

This is an example:

A person who is 155 pounds
and is exercising for 90 minutes ,
is not pregnant,

does not live in a dry climate,
drinks 0 alcoholic drink(s),
when the weather is not very hot or very cold,
and is not sick with fever or diarrhea should have:

86.5 ounces of water today, or 2.6 liters.

If you eat a healthy diet, about 20 percent of your water may come from the foods you eat. If you eat a healthy diet you can drink 69.2 ounces of water today, or 2.1 liters.

Remember that water is the best source for your daily fluid needs. Other good beverages include milk, herbal teas, low-sodium broth, 100% fruit and vegetable juices. Soft drinks will also count toward your daily total of fluid, just remember that sugar sweetened soft drinks and fruit juices add extra calories to you daily diet that you don't need.

Food Journal Challenge

You are challenge to keep your food journal for this cycle.

Importance of Food Diary in Losing Weight

According to US researchers, maintaining a food diary with a thorough description of what you eat and drink along with the number of calories it is made up of is a very effective method that can aid people lose weight . See also Can't Stop Eating.
A research conducted on 1,685 middle-aged men and women for six months. It proved that people who maintained a food diary for more or less everyday could lose almost twice the weight when compared to people who did not maintain the diary.

The finding of this research supports the previous research that ratified the importance of maintaining food diaries to help people lose weight. Many companies such as Weight Watchers International Inc incorporate food diaries in their weight-loss program .

According to Victor Stevens of Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research in Portland it is beneficial for people working on weight loss to write down everything they eat as it is a powerful technique.

Stevens, who was one of the lead for the study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine opines that maintaining a food diary helps participants know from where the additional calories are coming from and help them formulate further detailed plans to deal with those situations. He feels that with this technique dieters can be held accountable for what they eat.

The study was conducted on people from the four U.S. cities of Portland, Oregon; Baltimore, Maryland; Durham, North Carolina; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The average age of people involved in this study was 55.

The average weight loss of the people involved was about 13 pounds (6 kg). However, people maintaining a food diary for almost the whole week were able to lose 18 pounds (8 kg) when compared to 9 pounds (4 kg) weight loss for people not maintaining a food diary on a regular basis.

The participants were told to consume less fat, more vegetables, fruit and whole grains, exercise for 180 minutes a week, participate in group meetings and maintain a detailed food diary.

The study observed that black Americans are more prone to conditions related to obesity such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease than whites. 44 percent of the people in the study were blacks.

Dr. Keith Bachman, a Kaiser Permanente expert mentions that “Keeping a food diary doesn't have to be a formal thing. Just the act of scribbling down what you eat on a Post-It note, sending yourself e-mails tallying each meal or sending yourself a text message will suffice,"

Walking Pushups!!! By Team Leader NICOLE

I personally love these, call me weird!!!

Stand with your feet slightly wider than hip-width. Bend down from the waist, keeping a pike position and touch your toes. Walk your hands out on the floor in front of you till you are in full push-up/plank pose. If you can’t do the push-up, then hold the plank for a count of 5, if you can though, do 1 push-up, then walk your hands back to your toes. Stand up. Repeat. Do 30 reps, building up as you go!!! Oh yeah!! Feel the burn, baby!!
