My Grandfather passed away last Saturday. I just got home tonight from St. Paul, MN (4 hr drive) where all the events took place. It was very sad but he is no longer in pain and has finally joined my grandma in a better place. Our family is pretty close so that really helped.
To not help matters I pulled/strained my back on Monday. I was unable to even get off the couch for 2 days. The 4 hour car ride on Monday was ok, and the car ride today was ok as well. I am slowly getting back to normal, but I am very stiff. Monday was really rough. I even almost blacked out from the pain when I was trying to move to the couch. My poor husband wasn't quite sure what to do with that one. Luckily my brother (who is a physical therapist) was in town and I called him to come over. He helped me at home and while we were out of town at Grandpa's funeral. So....no exercise for me this month so far. I missed a full week of volleyball practice and a game as well....family comes first so I had no problem letting everyone cover for me. Tomorrow will be trying however since we have a tournament. I hope I survive the bus ride. I'm bringing pillows and lots of ibuprofen! Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts about my Grandpa in last month's forum. I appreciate your kindness Due to my back I am going to start with yoga as exercise before I move onto the cardio. I have a good dvd with back exercises. Any other suggestions for back exercises?

Cathy I am so sorry about your grandpa but so glad your family was all there to celebrate his life together and usher him back to your grandmother.
you know, backs have a way of going out right in the middle of stress like that. when i was working in the high school my back went out shortly after 9/11. i had just started that job and actually had to leave it due to the back. schools are amazingly supportive places, though, too, so do take advantage of that. i wouldn't go into yoga until you talk to a PT and really come out of the inflammation stage. i am a HUGE fan of ice, but i know for some alternating ice and heat work best. Walking is the best exercise for me for my back. It keeps me really stable. That plus core-strengthening exercises. There are some really great simple ones to do that any PT should be able to tell you - your yoga DVD may have that, too. Just do go slow and easy cuz as you know from your hubby backs can be tricky beasts! Stretching will be good too after the inflammation is gone. I feel for you - i couldn't walk for a few weeks without severe pain, i was crawling into chiropracters and doctors offices. it really can suck but i am proof that it can be okay, too! swimmingof course is THE BEST. again, let yourself heal a bit - then do things like walk and go on all fours doing opposite arm/leg lifts; you can do an abbreviated cobra by laying on your stomach and gently lifting your chest up with your arms - not too much bending; another tummy down and just reach your arms and feet long and away from each other; stretch your hamstrings, quads, and sides - they really place pressure on a back.
oh my, i got carried away - sorry - just love ya and feel for the pain!
the most imp't thing i learned is that everyone seems to have an opinion about backs (see my long-winded reply above), but YOU will know your body best. Listen to it

hugs,
deb
