Maybe this will help you stop drinking diet soda.

Phenylalanine - Aspartame
Phenylalanine is a hidden danger to anyone consuming aspartame. Most consumers don't know that too much Phenylalanine is a neurotoxin and excites the neurons in the brain to the point of cellular death.

ADD/ADHD, emotional and behavioral disorders can all be triggered by too much Phenylalanine in the daily diet. If you are one in ten thousand people who are PKU or carry the PKU gene, Phenylalanine can cause irreversible brain damage and death, especially when used in high quantities or during pregnancy. Phenylalanine is 50% of aspartame, and to the degree humans consume diet products, Phenylalanine levels are reaching a dangerous peak.

It is important to learn about the ingredients within your foods, especially isolated amino acids like Phenylalanine. They are in combination within nature for a reason - they don't belong in isolated form for the healthy human diet. Phenylalanine - Aspartame

I absolutely agree. I used to be a cola addict - very serious one. I have since substituted all colas/soft drinks in my life with carbonated water (available at Publix). It doesn't have any calories but it tingles the tongue just like fizzy cola used to. The only difference is that I don't get the sugar and other additives any more. It takes some getting used to but now I can't even drink anything else besides my "fizzy" water. Even when we go to a restaurant, I will order a Club Soda with Lemon..... YUMMMMMY very good stuff!!!!

I am guilty of this, I don't drink alot of diet sodas, but I do like them and drink them. I switched to splenda as a sweetener though, just because of this danger.

My husband loves perrier, I personally prefer San Pellegrino. But they are good substitutes for soda.

Splenda is just as bad I got this from the same website where she is promoting her book.

The Bitter Truth About Splenda®
Within my book, I reveal the scientific evidence strongly suggesting the chemical sweetener sucralose (Splenda) may harm your body. Perhaps there is no "free ticket" to eating all the sugar-free products you want without paying a high price physically – even weight gain!

Don’t despair – in Splenda®: Is It Safe Or Not? I give you plenty of safe alternatives to keep life “sweet.”

I disclose the research documenting the negative effects on the liver, spleen and kidneys of laboratory animals. In addition, I reveal research results of infertility in male rats and gastrointestinal problems in pregnant rats fed Splenda.

Consumers are not being told the entire truth about the long-term dangers of using artificial chemical sweeteners. Have you considered the fact that chemical sweeteners may be at the root of many unexplained disease symptoms that puzzle your doctor?

According to research referenced in the book, "giving sugar-free chemicals to your children or using them during pregnancy may be harmful to a child's emotional and physical maturation and to the normal development of a fetus."
