Hi Everyone,
I'd like to begin running, but am not sure how to get started.* I've been walking regularly for awhile now, and have low enough body weight that it is safe for me to run.* I'm wondering if anyone out there has any advice for beginners-- things to keep in mind, plans/schedules you've followed, etc.* I'd greatly appreciate it!
Thanks,
Michaela*

I get most of my information from RUNNER'S WORLD MAGAZINE I highly recommend their site...they have a section for beginners!! I also recommend the Jeff Galloway marathon training method...now, I know you didn't say anything about marathon training, but basically you run for a specific amount of time and take walk breaks in between....I'm thinking this may help make the transition easier and more enjoyable.* And I agree with Hannah....SHOES are THE most important investment you will make if you will take up running!! I recommend a specialty store, where you can get fitted for shoes...try a few pairs and see which one fits best---they should feel like BUTTER on your feet!!

Default RE: Beginning Runner

The best thing anyone ever told me when I was starting running was to focus on the number of minutes at the beginning.* Just say "I'm going to go out for 20 minutes today", and whether you walk, run, or a combination of the two, as long as you do 20 minutes you're cool.* Then when you can run for the full 20 minutes, add five minutes, even if you have to walk the last five.* When you can run 25, bump it to 30, etc.* When you can run for 30, THEN start looking at how far you're going, and you might be surprised!*
Unless you're training to try to win a race or something, mileage doesn't necessarily matter - it's just getting out there and doing the minutes.* By focusing on minutes you can still get your workout in even if you're not feeling 100% on a certain day; instead of thinking "Oh I can't do 4 miles, it'll take me FOREVER", you know you just have to do your minutes, walk, run, whatever.* And keeping the consistency of getting out there and doing it is what's important at the beginning.* Soon you'll start craving it!
Runnersworld.com is great like Jo recommended, and Hal Higdon has good stuff to use once you're up at that 30 minute point and want to start training for a specific run.
Other reminder:* Shoes, shoes shoes.* Invest in a good pair, they shouldn't run you more than $100 and should last around 400-500 miles of usage.* Stretching.* I'm BAD at this, so it's a do as I say not as I do thing, but you will be a happier, healthier runner if you spend 5-10 minutes after each run giving your muscles a nice stretch & cool down.* And finally, hydration!!* Be sure you're getting more than your 8 glasses of water a day on the days you run, your body will need it!
Good luck!
