Help! I Exercise and I Diet, but I'm Not Losing!

Q: I weigh nearly 300 pounds, and have only lost 5 pounds in the last two months. I use my Wii Fit and exercise 4-5 times a week. I watch my portions of food, eat fresh, lean foods and I don’t drink soda or sports drinks. I have even backed off my juice drink intake. Why am I not dumping off the pounds like everybody else?

A: Hi Barbara,

It seems that you’re a little frustrated, which is understandable. Let me try to help.

First, you mention that you have cut back on juice drinking. I’m not quite too sure how much you were drinking before, but I recommend you cut it out of your diet completely. Juice drinks are loaded with calories, so don’t drink them. They’re empty, excess calories in the form of sugar.

Second, while it sounds like you are making strides with exercise, I recommend returning the Wii Fit. Simply put, Wii Fit is a poor excuse that the entertainment world has given us for an exercise replacement. It’s not nearly intense enough, and frankly, most of the activities are a joke.

To see real results from your diet and exercise program, you need to start performing an exercise that will result in substantial calories burned. Go with an interval-based routine in which you alternate periods of low intensity with periods of high intensity for about 20 minutes.

To your fat-loss success,
Joel Marion
